5 ways to sleep better at night

August 27, 2017

Sometimes life gets crazy. When we finally end the day and put ourselves into bed, we start thinking about our work (Will I finish the report on time?), outfit for tomorrow birthday party (What will I wear?), trip planning (What should I pack? What the weather be like?), projects (Did I reply to all e-mails?).... that is keeping us restless all night. Having troubles falling asleep is pretty common.

I'm also guilty of checking all my social media, scrolling through the Instagram, watching Snapchat and YouTube videos, thinking of blog posts ideas, when I should be catching some precious sleep. Usually I'm a sleepyhead but sometimes I need to force myself to fall asleep.

Goodnight sleep is a key to our health and beauty. After sleepless night we feel tired, irritated and we have troubles concentrating. A person who sleeps well at night has better mood and is more productive. It can also show up on our face and affect digestion.

1. Comfort zone. Create yourself a place that you feel good and safe. Wear comfortable pjs, take your favorite blanket, wear the fluffy socks you love, hug a teddy bear or your beloved. Arrange your bedroom in a way that will help you fall asleep. Soft toned walls, comfortable bed, clean space, no clocks. Also, make sure if the light is not too bright, open the window if it is too hot and get rid of all flies and mosquitoes that may disturb you.

2. Routine. Try to set yourself a nightime routine. Have a sequence of things that you do before going to sleep. Drink herbal tea, remove makeup, have a shower, brush teeth... Make a ritual that you do everyday. This will help you prepare for the night and tell your body that it is time to sleep.

3. No phone allowed. I know it is tempting to check the new vid that your favorite YouTuber has just posted. Then you end up checking another one, and another... Make yourself a rule that when you go to sleep, you leave phone on the desk, or anywhere far away from your bed. Even better if you leave phone in other room. It doesn't have to be all the time by your side. But if you cannot stay away from the phone, turn on the airplane mode.

4. Wind down. Go for a walk, take a bath with essential oils, read a book, listen to calming music, anything relaxing for you. This will help you relief the stress and set your mind in peace.

5. Make notes. If winding down didn't help and your thoughts are still accumulating and keeping you awake, write them down on a paper. Maybe you got some brilliant idea or you need to check something, this way you will not forget it. Check the list next Morning and you can select ideas on the ones that you have to do immediately and the ones for later.
